Greening & Gardening

Go Green! It matters!

Lists abound across the internet of ways you can help the environment: Take shorter showers! Turn off the lights when you leave a room! I’ve written many of these lists myself and you have likely heard many of these ideas through such lists or other means of environmental teachings. Many people want to help the environment but just feel like such simple activities by one person could not possibly do enough to help conserve or protect. I am here to say, you can make a difference! Your actions and choices every single day do add up and do matter! And when you add together the impact you are making with your own family and others around you, the results are even greater.

Here is ANOTHER list of 10 simple ways to go green, but with some added facts that I hope will help you to see that minor choices you make every day to help the earth will make a difference!

Recycle cans! Recycling just one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a 100-watt bulb for 20 hours, a computer for 3 hours or a TV for 2 hours -- or the equivalent of a half a gallon of gasoline.

Recycle Glass! The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle will light a 100 watt light bulb for 4 hours.

Recycle Plastic bottles! Recycling a single plastic bottle can conserve enough energy to light a 60W bulb for up to 6 hours.

Use refillable water bottles instead of disposable plastic water bottles! If you replace one disposable plastic water bottle each day with a refillable bottle, you will avoid using 365 disposable bottles a year, that’s almost 5,500 plastic bottles avoided after 15 years! Now try to picture 1,300 water bottles filled with oil – that’s how much oil you will have conserved!

Bring reusable tote bags to use at the market! If you replace just 3 plastic bags a week with reusable bags, you will avoid using 156 plastic bags a year. Over 15 years, you will save the resources that go into making 2,340 bags!

Don't use the toilet as an ashtray or wastebasket! Every time you flush a facial tissue or other small bit of trash, five to seven gallons of water is wasted.

Turn off the water when brushing your teeth!    You will save about four gallons of water every time you brush your teeth by turning off the faucet.

Fix Leaky Faucets! A continuous leak from a hole that is one-sixteenth of an inch in diameter can waste 74,000 gallons of water over three months.   If the continuous leak is one-quarter of an inch, the wasted water could top 1 million gallons

Fix leaking toilets! A trickling toilet can waste 30 gallons per day – that’s over 200 gallons in a week. A leaking toilet can waste 250 gallons per day and a constantly running toilet can waste 4,000 gallons per day.

Turn off the lights when you leave a room! An average bulb uses 60 watts in an hour. If you turn that light off for one hour a day you will save 22,000 watts of energy in a year.

Replace a traditional incandescent light bulb with an energy saving CFL bulb! Using a CFL bulb lasts as long as six traditional light bulbs and saves up to 75% of the energy.
