Are We Watching Reality TV?

Are We Watching Reality TV?

I’m not sure if I’m just out of step with the rest of the world or whether I am in sync with those of my own generation and we are no longer in the loop, but “Reality TV” is just something I don’t understand and certainly do not find entertaining. Am I alone? Am I the only one who doesn’t care who “The Bachelor” marries or what “The Real Housewives of Wherever” are eating or doing for entertainment?

From what I’ve been able to ascertain, television sponsors are only interested in what people under the age of 50 are viewing. According to them, those of us who are on the other side of 50 do not spend enough money on the products being advertised to warrant our being listened to.  Does that make sense? Our children are grown and, for the most part, are no longer living with us. We are in a recession, that’s true for everyone, but it would seem logical that those of us who are no longer feeding a family of four or five, paying for our children’s fashion statements, their summer camps or helping with college tuition might have more discretionary money to spend, not less. Perhaps the time has come for us to make a statement.  I’m not exactly sure what that statement should be, but perhaps you have some thoughts on the subject.

Our generation changed the world forever, surely we should be able to come up with a way to have advertisers know that we are not so old and feeble that we have forgotten how to shop -- or to turn off our television sets!
