American Presidents Step Up To The Plate in Haiti

American Presidents Step Up To The Plate in Haiti

Barack Obama has asked Presidents Clinton and Bush to raise money for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. President Bush and President Clinton issued a joint statement that said: “In the days and weeks ahead we will draw attention to the many ways American citizens and businesses can help meet the urgent needs of the Haitian people.”
Partisan politics can often be very discouraging. Living in the United States, we have become quite accustomed to our politicians’ rabble rousing and to their zealous propaganda. For that reason, it’s been very heartening to see that in times of disaster, our country can put partisan politics aside and work together in a humanitarian effort to raise money for victims of the earthquake in Haiti. In responding to the crisis, both President Bush and President Clinton have said that their fundraising efforts are aimed not only at helping Haiti to overcome the disastrous effects of the earthquake, but to also help put the country on a path to prosperity.Wouldn’t it be wonderful if that actually happened!
All over America people are responding to the needs of earthquake victims. According to a survey by Zogby Interactive, 65 percent of adults in the U.S. have already given or are planning to give a donation to the victims of the earthquake victims in Haiti. We Americans tend to be an optimistic people. It’s very gratifying to see that in times of crisis, we can overcome the political jungle we live in and work together to help those in need … that even our presidents can put aside politics as usual and champion a cause that will save countless number of lives.

It's great to see that so many people are willing to help out the people in Haiti; there is so much devastation in that country as a result of the earthquake. I think it is especially encouraging that people are so giving with the economic strain our own country is in. Sometimes your own situation looks far less dire when you see the hardships others are facing.
